What Should You Do After a Collision
Should you be involved in a collision, the following information will assist you when reporting the details of the accident to the police and in your communications with your insurance company.
Stay Calm and make sure no one is injured. If there are injuries, call 9-1-1 immediately.Report the Collision Immediately: Call 9-1-1 or the Ottawa Police. A police report will assist in filing an accident claim with your insurance company. Here is Advice from the Ottawa Police Department:
- If there are injuries and the vehicle(s) cannot be driven…call 9-1-1
- If there are no injuries, but the vehicle(s) cannot be driven… call 613-230-6211
- If the vehicle(s) can be safely driven and there are no injuries, as soon as possible, or when directed by police, drive all vehicles to the same Police Station to file a report. Accident reports cannot be taken over the phone.
Take photos with your smartphone, or make a sketch of the accident site – Photos are best, since they are date-stamped and usually geo-tagged with your GPS location. If that isn’t possible, though, a sketch of the site showing the position of all vehicles and people involved will help when reporting details of the accident.
Exchange Information: Get appropriate information (name, address, phone, insurance, etc.) from all parties involved – including witnesses.
Don’t Sign a Tow Authorization: Insist that your vehicle be taken to the Tony Graham Collision Centre. If you have Toyota or Lexus Roadside Assistance, there will be no charge for this towing.
Contact your Tony Graham Service department to find out if you are currently covered by Roadside Assistance.
Know Your Rights
Contact your insurance company as soon as possible after the accident. Your insurance company may wish to direct you to a body shop they know and trust for a repair estimate.
Make sure your insurance company knows that you expect the repair to be carried out using Genuine OEM Collision Repair Parts – these are the high-quality parts that we use that are manufactured by your automaker (ex. Toyota or Lexus), as opposed to cheap aftermarket products which are usually inferior quality (ex. no-name parts from a generic parts or service depot). To help you gain a better understanding of the advantages of genuine parts, and to decide what’s right for you and your vehicle, we thought it was time to separate fact from fiction. And the fact is, for safety, quality, durability and value, there is no substitute for genuine OEM collision repair parts.
