News & Press

July 16, 2010 - Palo Alto, California, U.S.A., and Tokyo, Japan - TESLA MOTORS, INC. (Tesla) and TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) today announced that the two companies have signed an agreement to initiate the development of an electric version of the RAV4 as announced in May of this year by Elon Musk and Akio Toyoda. With an aim to market the EV in the United States in 2012, prototypes will be made combining the Toyota RAV4 model with a Tesla electric powertrain. Tesla plans to produce and deliver a fleet of prototypes to Toyota for evaluation within this year. The first prototype has already been built and is now undergoing testing.

In May, Tesla and TMC announced their intent to cooperate on the development of electric vehicles, parts, and production system and engineering support. Tesla seeks to learn and benefit from Toyota's engineering, manufacturing, and production expertise, while Toyota aims to learn from Tesla's EV technology, daring spirit, quick decision-making, and flexibility.

TMC has, since its foundation in 1937, operated under the philosophy of "contributing to society through the manufacture of automobiles," and made cars that satisfy its many customers around the world. TMC introduced the first-generation Prius hybrid vehicle in 1997. The company also plans to introduce EVs into the market by 2012.

Tesla's goal is to produce increasingly affordable electric cars for mainstream buyers - relentlessly driving down the cost of EVs. California-based Tesla designs and manufactures EVs and EV powertrain components, and is currently the only automaker in the U.S. that builds and sells highway-capable EVs in serial production.

July 8, 2010 - - Featured in the 2010 Prius, Toyota's full hybrid powertrain remains an industry benchmark for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions

- Toyota has won a total of 22 International Engine of the Year awards since the awards began in 1999

Toyota's engineering excellence and long-standing commitment to sustainable mobility leadership have been rewarded with wins in the 'Green Engine of the Year' and 'Sub 1.0-litre' categories at the 2010 International Engine of the Year Awards.

The victories represents a true international recognition, with both Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) engine and 1.0 VVT-i engine (available in certain markets outside of North America in Aygo, Yaris and iQ models) having been tested and judged by a panel of 72 automotive journalists from 35 countries. Toyota's latest success reinforces the company's International Engine of the Year track record, with 22 wins (out of a total 144) since the awards began in 1999.

The 2010 International Engine of the Year judges praised Toyota's HSD powertrain as "The essence of mechanical, electric and electrical ingenuity in one affordable package", "still the best green technology available on the market -reliable and durable, with very low real life CO2 emissions" and "more powerful, polished and parsimonious -the latest, thoroughly redesigned version of Toyota's iconic hybrid drivetrain is better in every way that counts".

Green Engine of the Year - Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD)
With the 2010 award, this becomes the fourth time in the past five years that Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain has been voted as 'Green Engine of the Year'. Toyota HSD's globally recognized powertrain technology is one of the most successful in the history of the awards, with a total of 11 titles.

Toyota's HSD, as featured in the 2010 Prius, is 90 per cent newly-developed, with significant improvements over the system used in previous Toyota hybrid models. The Toyota Prius' Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain delivers performance and power, all while using less fuel and lowering emissions. The 2010 Prius achieves a combined fuel consumption of just 3.8 L / 100 km and Tier 2 Bin 3 emissions. The 2010 Prius improves power by 22% while simultaneously improving fuel consumption by 7% compared to the previous generation.

March 2, 2010 - Arlington, Virginia – The 2010 Toyota Corolla and Scion xB have earned “Top Safety Pick” awards in testing by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). They are the first Toyota models to earn the designation since the IIHS added a new rollover test to the criteria for 2010.

Both models also earned the Top Safety Pick award in 2009.

To qualify for a Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of “good” in the Institute’s front, side, rollover and rear impact tests, and be equipped with electronic stability control.

To earn the top rollover rating, a roof must support the equivalent of four times the vehicle’s weight compared with the current federal standard of 1.5. In the tests, the xB’s roof withstood a force equal to 6.8 times the car’s weight, while the Corolla supported 5.1 times the car’s weight.

“Top Safety Pick recognizes the vehicles that afford buyers the best overall protection in common crashes,” said IIHS president Adrian Lund. “With more top performers, there’s no reason to buy a small car with less than stellar crash test ratings.”

Lesux HS 2010CanadianDriver.com, the respected online automotive magazine, recently announced its first annual Top Picks awards. The 2010 RX 450h was selected as one of the top 20 new vehicles in the Canadian marketplace among a broad range of classes, makes and models.

The magazine’s panel of senior editors and writers, who have a combined 60 years of test-driving experience, based their decision on key factors such as styling, comfort, functionality, quality, performance, fuel economy, safety features, reliability, and value for money. They also considered class-specific advantages such as cargo capacity, payload, towing, utility, and ground clearance.

The all-new 2010 RX 450h hybrid was also recently named Best New SUV/CUV over $60,000 by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada.
